The Start of a Haphazard Legend of the Five Rings Diary

Probably one of the oddest things I enjoy about playing L5R is emailing battle reports to my friend Joe. Joe is the artist at www.torcpress.com and also initially got me interested in L5R. However, he lives in Illinois, I live in Minnesota. I didn't start playing til I found out that a couple of other friends in Minnesota are part of a decently sized L5R play group. Hence my need to relate battle reports to Joe. And now, my readers. Lucky you.

I suppose I should break down the decks I have at some point, otherwise I'll have to describe them in every post, much like the first Nezumi vs. Tomorrow post.

First, there's the Ratling deck. I've just changed it to The Meeting Place, with lots of Bushi and the expected Archer's Squads, etc. It plays heavy followers, with a few items, namely Daikyo (for Ruantek), that little bow that gives a person -3F, and a couple of the little rat staves that let me swap weapons.

My next favorite deck is a Uni deck. Not quite a Moto Smash, but it works along the same lines, running the Northen Provinces of Moto, and followers, with your simple pony tactics of build force and take the undefended provinces.

Below those two, I have a couple of decks that get leftovers, and a few deck ideas that I tinker with, but have yet to build.

There's a Phoenix deck with City of Remembrance that wants to run the unaligned dragons, but only has two of them. Haven't actually played it since I switched ti to this concept. Before it was the sh that makes spells cheap opens.

Then there's a Scorpion deck that performs damn well as a mutt made of leftovers. Damn well for never winning. There's no real concept to it, but it's running Kayuden Bawhoever (the 2 wind sh), and tickles military might with a bit of control. It's fun in multi's, and the one win it has was in a multi with another Scorpion deck and a Shadowlands deck. For about a half hour in that game it finished the turn with 40 honor, but started the next turn with 37, as the two Scorpions fought for control.

In the concept pile is a Dragon enlightenment deck, a Rat enlightenment deck (haha), and a Lion rampage deck. Obviously, I like to attack, and I also like to play decks other people don't (in our group anyway). The core players I play with are running Crane, Crab, Mantis, Phoenix, Shadowlands, and Scorpion. I've no interest in Crane, Crab, or Shadowlands, and I'll steer clear of Mantis just cause I can satiate my PK need with some rat and Uni cards... Hell, I only got a Scorpion deck cause I wasn't interested in Lion when Wrath of the Emporer came out. And the only reason I got Phoenix was because no stores in our area had Diamond Dragon decks at all. I've still not seen any in two months. I'll have to order from www.l5r.com if I want one I guess...

Of course, I'll probably just post some changes as I make them to all of these lists anywho, but there's a breakdown. Can you tell it's a slow night at the hospital?
